Contribute to Japan’s national interests and to peace in the international community by leveraging the global perspective cultivated at APU.
Airin Kitamura
College of Asia-Pacific Studies, Graduated in 2017
Worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Tokyo)
I chose to enroll at APU because of its strong global programs, including study abroad opportunities, which I believed would allow me to expand my potential onto the world stage. During my time at APU, the experience that contributed most to my personal growth was my exchange study at the University of Bergen in Norway. By joining a local choir and building deep connections with international students from various countries, I was able to develop my multilingual language skills as well as my communication abilities. With support from the Career Office, I also passed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Overseas Establishment Staff Program, which became a major turning point in my career. After being selected, I took a leave of absence from university and worked for a total of five years at the Japanese embassies in the United Kingdom and Norway. Through these experiences, I realized my desire to engage more professionally in diplomacy, which led me to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a national civil servant. Going forward, I hope to continue contributing to Japan’s national interests and to the peace and prosperity of the international community by applying the global perspective, communication skills, and adaptability that I cultivated at APU.
