Understanding Yourself Better

There are probably several people around you who find it difficult to understand what they are thinking. Since this is true even among Japanese people, it may be even more difficult to understand them when you spend time with people from other countries. However, if you learn about the environment and culture of the region where they were born and raised, you may find that they are easier to understand. Cultural anthropology is the study of human beings. The theme of cultural anthropology is to understand others, and at the same time, to learn more about oneself by examining the words and actions of others as they apply to oneself.

For example, the elderly in Vietnam, where the majority of the population is Buddhist, sublimate their fear of death and sadness at the loss of social roles to joy through charitable activities at temples. It may be difficult for someone your age to understand the emotional dynamics of the elderly and what is happening in other countries. Still, if you know the history of Vietnam and the unique culture and customs of life in this multi-ethnic country, you should be able to make some sense of it.

Studies in Culture, Society, and Media are linked to the various academic genres in the College of Asia Pacific Studies, fostering the ability to think holistically and without stereotypes. That skill will surely be useful wherever you go in the world.
